About Us

ARA Petroleum Tanzania (APT) is the operator of the Ntorya Gas Field, Tanzania’s largest onshore gas project. We are building infrastructure and expanding our operations so that we can start producing gas from Ntorya for the Tanzanian market soon.

APT is a wholly owned subsidiary of ARA Petroleum, an Omani exploration & production company with more than 10 years’ experience of turning complex fields into commercial operations.

APT was created in 2018 to acquire a 50% share in Tanzania’s Ruvuma Production Sharing Agreement (PSA), a licence agreement which contained the Ntorya gas discovery. By 2020, APT had become the PSA’s operator. We immediately conducted a 3D seismic survey of the licence area, which at 338 km2, became one of the largest onshore 3D seismic taken in East Africa. The processed data from the survey informed APT’s field development plans and demonstrated the area’s huge prospectivity and potential.

The ongoing work to produce first gas from Ntorya is expected to boost Tanzania’s gas output by between 20-80%. This work is just the first phase of Ntorya’s development as the seismic and appraisal activities show much more gas lies beneath.

Our ambition in Tanzania is to use our strengths and experience to unlock Ntorya’s gas potential through a successful initial development and further exploration of the field.

Our wish is to build a strong Tanzanian team around this development and impart our knowledge and capabilities as we become an important part of the country’s energy landscape.
